How touch interface design is really getting important in UI/UX

Mobile devices are on everyone’s minds when it comes to web development and SEO.  Mobile digital media time in the US is now significantly higher at 51% compared to desktop (42%), according to SmartInsights.  So what does this mean to you?  It means that if your website is not optimized well for mobile, half of your potential customers will not want to use your products and services.  Nobody wants to deal with a business whose website doesn’t function well on their mobile device if a similar businesses does it well. 

So how do you optimize for mobile devices?  Design needs to provide a great experience no-matter the platform, and since mobile-device screens involve touching with the finger, not just using a mouse to move a cursor you should be keeping points of engagement large enough and distinct enough to be easily usable by touch.  If you omit touch friendly choices to make something work with your finger, it will be challenging for a visitor or guest.  Why would anyone create a site that intentionally makes it more difficult for a customer or potential client to engage with your business.

Interaction-Design.org has a good article on user interface design for touch screen.  Basically, the way you should setup your website or app is to make sure all elements are positioned correctly.  The size of your finger is bigger than the size of a cursor.  That means links, buttons, sliders, and anything that can be interacted with has to be positioned and spaced out correctly for a person to be able to engage with it and get what they want.

 

Also, it can be guaranteed that a better touch interface design can retain more organic traffic and convert more leads than than an interface that functions, but wasn’t designed for mobile.  Interfaces that were designed to function on mobile will retain more people and get more action.

You have 2 audiences: the younger generation (usually the millennials) and the Boomer / Gen-X crowd.  The older generation is the one you would have to worry about.  Tapping your gadget’s screen?  “Swiping” your screen to see more information?  What does this all mean?  Some older adults who are more tech-savvy will be excited about all of this, while others will become impatient if something is too confusing and will end up touching random things and being confused about what they are doing.

What happens if your customers are not using mobile…..maybe only a small percentage are using mobile devices.  In that case, maybe you won’t have to worry as much.  But based on recent statistics, it would be recommended to get ready for a mobile transition.  For those who have a lot of customers coming from mobile devices, it would be recommended to hire a mobile UI and UX designer.  User Interface is one thing but it’s all about the experience.  Designing something that is not only smooth, but also gives the person using it a great experience and experience goes a long way.
